Luckily, hardwood is an incredibly simple material to maintain. Here's what you need to know to keep your hardwood floors looking like new!
Water is a No-No
There is nothing worse for wood than water. It causes your floors to warp, separate, buckle, and discolor. It's a real disaster. So, the main thing to keep in mind when it comes to maintenance is to avoid extended contact with water at all costs. Wipe up any spills as soon as possible, place mats at any door leading to into the house, and you might even want to consider a no shoes policy, at least on wet days.
You will also want to use a nearly dry mop, or a microfiber mop, to clean your floors more thoroughly. Make sure to wring your mop out well, and only apply as much water as needed to get the job done. You might also want to go over the floors with a dry mop once you're done, to dry the floors more quickly.
Sweep Frequently
Without frequent sweeping, gritty dirt particles will start to build up, erode the finish of your hardwood flooring, and expose it to further damage. Luckily, this is easy to avoid by simply sweeping or vacuuming the floors regularly.
You'll want to use a soft bristle broom, and if you use a vacuum, always make sure the beater brush is disengaged, or you could do more harm than good and seriously damage your lovely wood.
Lift With Your Knees!
Whenever you have to move your furniture, always make sure to lift it, never drag it. You can cause some seriously deep gouges and scratches that can only be fixed by sanding and refinishing your floors. While it is good to do this from time to time, the process can only be undertaken a limited number of times. The less you have to refinish, the longer your floors will last.
