Hardwood flooring

What’s the difference between solid and engineered hardwood flooring?

There are two types of hardwood floors and while most are familiar with solid, get to know engineered wood floors if you haven't already. These are taking over a significant share of the wood flooring industry because they appeal to people who want both beauty and practicality.

Come in to explore our inventory when you are shopping for hardwood flooring in Woodstock. We have a complete inventory of both hardwood versions.

Similar in appearance, different in construction

Either version will give you beautiful oak, maple, hickory, ash (among others) floors, complete with undertones, knots, grains, and swirls. Both are long-lasting, versatile enough to fit into any decor, can be refinished, and add value to a property. But, unfortunately, that's where the similarity ends.

Underneath, engineered floors are made up of layers of genuine wood combined with resin and placed in a crosswise position. This makes the product more stable and better able to handle water. As a result, it can be placed in some higher-than-normal moisture areas where solid isn’t recommended.

More installation techniques

While solid is always the traditional tongue and groove nail down, engineered floors can be glued, stapled, or installed to float. A floating floor means the pieces click together, mat, then hover over a clean, dry, and level subfloor without nails or glue.

There are no limits as to the kind of subfloor engineered floors that can be placed over. Even concrete is OK, as long as it's dry; no boards or meshes are needed!

Other differences include thickness. While the ideal for solid is ¾-inch, engineered comes in a range from ⅜-inch to ½-inch. Thicker is better since that number will determine the number of times it can be refinished. It is also somewhat less expensive than solid, probably because the installation is faster and less complicated.
